Best running shoes for flat feet and plantar fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common triggers for heel pain, particularly among runners. Regular stretching is a good start, but you can also invest in running shoes that help relieve foot pain.
While there are no specific running shoes for plantar fasciitis, there are some smart features to watch out for when purchasing. Experts recommend choosing shoes with good arch support, support cushioning, shock-absorbing soles, and a deep heel to keep plantar fasciitis symptoms under control.
In general, it’s smarter to choose heavier shoes, as light sneakers aren’t very supportive, says podiatrist Hillary Brenner, DPM, of New York. “You don’t want to fold your shoe in half like a burrito,” she explains.
Here are the best running shoes for flat feet and plantar fasciitis (as well as insoles!) that you should add to your gym wardrobe if you suffer from this foot condition.

Flat foot: what is it?

The arch of the foot is formed by the tarsal and metatarsal bones and is reinforced with ligaments and tendons. This allows the foot to keep the weight of the body in an upright posture with as little weight as possible.
The height of the arch determines the pronation and type of foot. The height of the arch of the foot can be easily checked with a wet foot test.
People with a low arch do not have a pronounced curvature along the inside of the foot. An imprint made in the wet test can cover almost the entire foot. People with low arches are more likely to be overpronated, which can result in injuries. Insufficiently expressed bows are called low or fallen bows.
The term flat feet refers to an arc that lies completely on the ground.

What Causes Flat Feet and What Can You Do About It?

  • Genetic
  • Weak arches
  • Injuries
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction, rupture or injury
  • Nervous system or muscle diseases
Collapsed arches cause flat feet and occur due to muscle weakness. It can be helped, but your feet may need arch support until they get stronger.
If you have flat feet due to muscle weakness, there are a few simple stretches and exercises you can do at home to help strengthen the muscles in your feet.
    Rolls of tennis balls
Put a tennis ball under one foot, sit up straight, and roll the ball under the arch of your foot for two to three minutes. Repeat on the opposite foot.
  • Raise your heel
Stand upright and lift your heels as high as possible using a chair or a wall for balance. Hold for five seconds, then lower your heels to the floor.
Make two to three sets of 15 to 20 raises.
  • Tower loops
Sit with a towel under one foot and crumple the towel with your toes. Make sure you keep the mall with your foot on the ground.
Do two to three sets of 15 to 20 towel loops.
  • Toe Yoga
Lift your big toe as you press the others down and hold for five seconds. Then raise your four toes as you hold your big toe and hold for five seconds. Repeat on the other foot.
Those with anatomically flat feet have more stress on their knees which leads to knee problems. The reason for this is that flat feet can cause the lower body to become misaligned, causing the shin and femur to rotate inward.

Plantar fasciitis and flat feet are often confused. They are not the same but they are related.
Flat feet, sometimes called fallen arches, refer to a condition of the foot where the arches are flattened, so when standing, the soles of your feet touch the floor. Flat feet are linked to overpronation, and those who suffer from this condition are more likely to develop plantar fasciitis.
